what is the definition of "trivia" and does it lead to knowledge and learning?

if we aren't allowed diplomas in trivia, it has been suggested we use the tag "general knowledge" instead. i'll use both here, just incase.

To me, trivia is general knowledge that doesn't easily fit into a category, although that does not mean that all trivia is trivial - for example, asking for where you can find live ants is trivia, but could be really important to someone, and indeed, may draw users to this site - which is exactly what Lycos wants. Surely, the point of this site is to draw together a diverse range of facts and opinions that will be useful to others, and trivia is a perfect example of what this site has to offer!

I think Duffy has a sound point. However, if the question was tagged Insects, that would make for better indexing. My point being that most of the questions tagged Trivia, could easily be tagged else where with a little thought.

More to the point, if Lycos is going to determine which tags qualify and which don't for diplomas, then I think they need to look at the whole tags issue and actually fix them so people have to enter their question into a given tag, rather than simply make one up on the spur of the moment.

Questions like how long is a piece of string, is Trivia. But when some-one puts question and you do a search it is General Knowledge off sorts, i have look up quite a few questions on search enignes and though well i never knew that. Trivia is rather an Ambigious sort of Question etc.

The term trivia is widely used to refer to tidbits of unimportant (or trivial) information, but it can also mean general knowledge. Generally, the latter definition prevails when people "play trivia".

Trivia in Roman mythology was the equivalent of the Greek goddess Artemis, "goddess of the hunt", or possibly of Hecate. She was the three-faced deity of those crossroads where three roads came together; her name meant "of the three ways". At the new moon, Athenians put on lavish entertainments and made sacrifices to her and distributed their gifts to the poor.
