The politics or policies of the US government are that detainees are to be treated according to the Geneva Convention.

In reality, they're not doing that, hence the rumblings from the UN and allies of the US.

The detainees at Guantanamo Bay for example are being held there in contravention of International Law but treated (allegedly) according to International Law....which is a bit of a joke as they have no access to lawyers as well as a whole host of other things.

The Geneva Convention states something like prisoners must not be treated inhumainly. George W. Bush thinks this is too vauge so they are trying pass a bill through the house and senete which will George to interprut what that means. So basically it means it would forbid "torture", rape and biological experiements. a deffinition of torture is still up for debate. For example is waterboarding or sleep depreivation torture.

The new rules will also allow trials, but will not still not allow prisoners certain rights such as knowing why they are being detained!
