What is the difference between Great Britian, United Kingdom, and the Bristish Isles?

As I know it;
GB - Great Britian, is England, Scotland, Wales
UK - United Kingdom, the the above 3, plus Northern Ireland

British Isle, is this just another name for GB, or does this contain other countries (like the Isle of Man (as an example)
Supplement from 10/11/2006 02:57pm:
Many thanks, for that :-)

GB - England, Sotland, Wales.

UK - England, Scorland, Wales & Northen Ireland.

British Isle - All the above plus Eire (ROI) and all the small island round (like Isle of Man, White and so on...).

Oh dear ... Great Britain is England, Scotland and WALES; United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Ireland is neither part of Great Britain or the United Kingdom and Whales are sea going mammals.

You are, therefore, correct in your assumption and this website will confirm your conclusion:

Supplement from 10/11/2006 03:02pm:

Not quite; the Isle of Wight is part of England but the Isle of Man and the Channel Isles are Crown dependancies.

Supplement from 10/11/2006 03:04pm:

The British Isles consists of two island groups; ROI and UK.

The name of the sovereign nation is "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". (Before Ireland's independence in 1922, it was the U.K. of Great Britain and Ireland.) "Great Britain" is the name of the large island with England, Scotland (to the north), and Wales (a peninsula in the west). The "British Isles" include Great Britain, Ireland, and some smaller surrounding islands. "England" is a division of the U.K. Even today, the divisions of Great Britain have differing cultural traditions and accents (and pockets of surviving languages) that reflect the different invasions and settlements over the past 2500 years. All the earliest settlers in New England came from England, bringing English customs and language. Colonial New England was part of the "British Empire", a term no longer used.
