Is superstring theory no more than a mathematical equation or does it relate to actual observations by scientists?

Superstring remains theory I think, mainly due to the following preventing observation -

From memory, not a quote -

A string in comparison to the world around us is comparitivly the same size as a house in relation to the whole universe, so, the ratio of a string would compare a house to the scale of the universe - I hope that makes sense..

UNIVERSE ---> house
HOUSE-------> string

Thus observation is impossible at this moment.

String theory should be able to describe the physics of the Planck scale and the Big Bang.

In its final form string theory should be able to provide answers to answer questions like:

Where do the four forces that we see come from?
Why do we see the various types of particles that we do?
Why do particles have the masses and charges that we see?
Why do we live in 4 spacetime dimensions?
What is the nature of spacetime and gravity?
