What is the function/purpose of the internal socket/s present on USB/Firewire PCI cards? The external are obvious but i see no purpose for the internal ones. Am I missing something?

I asked myself the same, and it could possibly be for checks when opening the computer to search for errors. But it is also possible to make extensions from them.
Another opinion?

They're a legacy fitting for the earlier days of USB/Fire wire cards. It was possible then to buy things like CD ROM drives etc that were USB and pugged in inernally

There is another use. Many PC cases have frontside USB/firewire ports and these have to be connected somewhere. Some manufacturers route a cable through the PC and our the back to plug into one of the rear external ports but plugging these internally is a much cleaner solution. My own, (self built), PC makes good use of these internal ports.
