Large should be plasma - 32 inches or less you should go with lcd. For best advice buy a copy of "What Hi-fi" - costs around £4 and will tell you all you need to know and has pages and pages of reviews on products - seems sensible when you are spending upwards of £1000 on a TV.
Both last around the same length of time, (longer than conventional TVs)

Time should not be the issue meantime to failure of a plasma is around 60000 hours (at the bottom end). If you watch it 8 hours per day this would be about 20/21 years of life. You will probably be changing the TV long before then.

Some incidental differences that may affect your decision is that the plasma uses a lot more energy and puts out a lot more heat.
