Has anyone checked their council Tax banding?

Homeowners are being urged to check their council tax band to see if they are entitled to claim money back from their local authority.

Properties were put into council tax bands in 1991, and many valuations were wrong, said consumer campaigner Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert.com

He said those who have been overpaying could be in line for a windfall.

I only moved in to my house last October so I'm sure that I would have been put on the correct band. Its worth a check though, thanks another job for list of things to do! lol

Aiming mansions is already in the top band ... can't get any worse lmao

Supplement from 01/25/2007 10:34am:

One useful thing to do is check the demographic classification of your Postcode area using a site like Checkmyfile http://www.checkmyfile.com/neighbourhood.asp copy. Many councils used this type of classification to set banding. If you house is below the general level reported for your neighbourhood, you may be rated too highly

I don't wish to sound flippant, because Council Tax has been a big issue for some time now, but I have to say, living in this 'place'(trying to think of suitable replacement for mansion that Aiming used..), I'd be more than fed up if I were to find I was being overcharged for Council Tax. As it stands, I don't have such concerns, due to exemption from paying it, which, don't get me wrong, I'd just 'love to have to'. What I'm saying is.. if I had to, I'd have 'strong' objections on having 'any' banding for this property, because of its size, location, quality, etc, let alone the banding it already has.

We were in the wrong band when we moved into our house ten yuears ago, appealed, an were moved down a band - when I think of how much we have saved over the last decade, I am really grateful that I did complain. The good thing is that if you have been overcharged, you can get a rebate of the overpayment - so it can be worth literally thousands of pounds for people to check - I almost wish that we hadn't appealed as a massive refund would come in very welcome just about now!
