He died at the age of 93 (11 days after the death of his wife,91) and was the longest living former British PM in history.
It was a stormy period for him as Prime Minister as he ruled over the imfamous "Winter of Discontent" in 1978. This was when trade unions carried out strikes that brought the country to a standstill, Lord Callaghan refused to hold an early election which may have delivered a Labour victory. As as result of a power struggle with the far left, including the unions, it made way for a conservative government led by M. Thatcher.
