What are good things to do in venice that might not be on the top of tourist guide lists?

My girlfriend and her mum are off to venice for a nice little holiday - they are both reading their lonely planet ish guides - but is there anything these guides don't mention or anything that they don't put much emphasis on? They have never been before.

Try just going to a local pub and mixing with the loclas its the best way to really see a country to spend time with locals have a nice trip
