Why are so many people scared of dogs?

Surely not everybody who is scared of dogs has been bitten?
My friend has literally stood on the stairs in tears because of Fox, who is a love bunny, I just wondered why so many people are scared because surely not everyone has been bitten?
Could it be because the parents pass this fear on?

I think it depends on whether people are brought up with pets or not. Some of my childrens friends are scared of my dog (these are not dog owners)because he is big, noisy and a bit bouncy and I have a good friend who comes round with her two children both under 4years old and they are fine with him. As she visits very often I have taught Fergie how to behave when the are here. It all comes down to education. I also think it comes down to instinct, if I get a gut feeling not to approach a dog, I don't.

When I was little, living back in my country of origin, I was surrounded by animals, such as birds, pigs, and with my aunt always bringing home stray dogs, it was a fun environment to grow up in. I throughly loved all the animals, especially the dogs that were introduced to our home, and I can even vaguely rememeber riding on a big dog, pretending it was a horse. However, when I came to the UK, I was about 4 years old, and was playing outside with the neighbours, and was chased by a huge alsatian, barking and flashing it's teeth at us down the road. From that moment, I have been scared stiff of dogs, and will cross the road if one comes across my path. As soon as I see any dog, my heart beats a little faster and my palms start to sweat.

I spend a lot of time walking a friend's Alsatian, and it amazes me how few people will walk on the same pavement as him! He's the softest dog in the world and it upsets me too.
I think certain breeds have had so much bad press as 'dangerous' dogs that a lot more people are mistrustful now. It seems daft to me; if you're not sure how friendly a dog is, surely you just ask the owner!
(By the way, Fox is beautiful, can (s)he come and live with me?)

It's instinctive.
All dogs are evolved wolves and prior to Man's adoption of tools, every predator was a threat.

There are many reasons why people can be frightened of dogs. Children are frightened of dogs if their parents are or if they have had a bad experience with dogs. This can then persist into adulthood.
My grandchildren from 2 families
1. 3 boys happy to walk in and among my large dogs from birth. Not worried by barking or play
2. 2 girls only now at 13 and 16 are they confident to play and walk with them.
Family 1 both parents confident with dogs.
Family 2 my son in law fears dogs.
My dogs are children friendly and always supervised. However good the temperament they are animals not humans and should be treated accordingly and with respect.
As far as children are concerned the Kennel Club has an excellent programme for children 'Safe and Sound' it explains clearly how they should behave around dogs.As a result of taking part in this programme far fewer children or adults for that matter would be bitten.
When I owned German Shepherds I also found that people crossed the road to avoid them.

Personally I'm a little scared of dogs (some more so than others and I am trying to get over the fear by petting them when I know from the owners that they are friendly etc.)
When I was small (till around 3) we had a large dog that I vaguely remember and I am told that I played with him quite a lot. I'm not sure what happened to him.
Then when I was 4 I remember seeing our neighbor's dog take a chunk out of the newspaper guy when he came by their house. I was also chased down the street by another one when I was about 6. I've never been bitten (with the exception of friendly nips I guess later in life) but those two incidents have put the fear of dogs in me.
I also think that dogs can sense your fear of them and act differently towards someone who is afraid of them than those that approach them lovingly so they might seem less friendly toward you which could compound the fear.
