Am I alone? Does listening to sad songs when you're down make you happier?

Supplement from 09/23/2007 08:08pm:
Wow, what a difference 24hrs makes. A good dose of self pity and morbidity really clears the head. I was so moved that, inspired by my good friend CC's work (I'll never be as good), I wrote a very average poem. I was so pleased as it is the first one I have ever completed, I usually muster a verse or two and it never goes anywhere. I've been through more emotions than Shatner on The Transformed Man. Right now, I'm feeling super elation as I so chuffed with my poem. I won't mither you with it but I will share if requested. I'm not stopping long as I'm induldging in some of my favourite things, Faustino, Ironing and my MP3 player.

Supplement from 09/23/2007 08:14pm:
Right, it is personal but quite cryptic, I hope. Criticism welcome, although I like it even if you don't!

Lonely but not alone
She visited me again
From further than before
With wings and modified genes
Nearly fifteen since the first
Over four since the last
She knows I want her
She knows I need her
But she made me take a vow
I wonder, if she calls again
Will she take me?
Or will I take myself

Not usually, but a good comedy film can pick me up no end.

Supplement from 09/23/2007 09:27pm:

The poem however apart from the length, puts me in mind of japanese haiku poetry (I think thats the correct spelling)

Can do, so long as they're overblown, blowsy and magnificent.

I do to a certain extent but they have to be very melancholy so that I can then see the lighter side of my troubles. Nothing quite like someone elses pain and misery to realise your life isn't as catastrophic as you believe.

First, don't be afraid of being alone and yes sad songs can make you feel sadder than you already feel.

Everyone likes to listen to a sad song occasionally and yes it does cheer one up in some bizarre way but not all the time.

Some sad songs can reinforce a sad mood, keep away from them and read a good book to take your mind off yourself, no, not a sad book, but a nice bland thriller, it works wonders honest. :-)

Sometimes when I feel down and I listen to sad songs it can make me feel better as they remind me of times when I have felt even worse so that sometimes cheers me up! (If that makes sense!)

It does works this way for me too. Sad songs usually cheer me up if I am down where happy ones will put me in tears if I am down. Think a sad song brings out the fight in me where happy ones when I am down make me feel even more miserable.

Hard rock or heavy metal played loudly also cheers me up when I am in a bad mood, or at least stops me thinking about it

the only sad song that keeps me down is "vincent" by don mclean...

music in general feeds your soul (well, feeds mine, anyway), so whilst i may get emotional it doesn't necessarily mean i'm sad ;) it just means i'm human.

Supplement from 09/22/2007 11:05pm:

this, for example could be taken as a sad song, but i just sit, listen... and sing.

Supplement from 09/23/2007 08:42pm:

you do yourself an injustice. that's a really emotive piece, and yeah, cryptic. i can't work it out, but it's making me feel...something.

and kudos for sharing it :)

I get up every day and check what mood I'm in. I indulge that mood until it's finished. When I am sad I listen to sad songs. Once the sadness is all out and done my mood changes. Does it make me happier? Well, I check myself again and see what mood I'm in....I indulge that mood...and so on...

Absolutely! I've always been this way. 'Depressing' music cheers me, cheery music depresses me. Nice to find a kindred spirit. (If the song is totally slit-your-wrists depressing, it makes me laugh out loud!)
