Is the Church over-reacting over the film release of "The Da Vinci Code"?

I mean it is just a movie after all... right?
Just like it was...just a book... right?

Supplement from 05/07/2006 12:21pm:

Sorry, bit of an over-reaction there! :-}

Supplement from 05/07/2006 12:23pm:

I don't think so, although a devout atheist I do think that the Christian faith has come in for a lot of stick over the years for various issues and some of them have said that enough is enough.

religion has taken a backseat with kids + teenagers in the last decade u have 2 admit. The church is struggling 2 connect.
A bestselling book portraying christ having a love affair with a prostitute pulls more audiences than sunday school.

Still, i guess it's upped the interest in the church...in some kind of way.

I don't think the church are reacting any worse than they did when 'The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail' came out, I understand they tried very hard to get that banned! But then to put it in to context, would the book even be considered as movie potential if it were in a similar vain to the Muslim faith?

Probably not, and what reaction would come of that if it did?

Yeah, the Catholic church over-reacted, and in doing so probably brought the book even more sales than it already had and made themselves look a bit silly.

But there are degrees of over-reaction. Church protests against the Da Vinci Code are a lot more restrained than certain Muslim protests against Danish cartoons, Sikh groups intimidating a Birmingham theatre into stopping production of a play, or American fundamentalist Christians teaching children that evolution is no more valid a theory than creationism.
