Another stealth tax - will this affect you?

I've just been sent details of another stealth tax, which surprisingly doesn't seem to have caught the public awareness.

Basically, drivers of large vehicles are going to have to pay considerably more for their tax disc.

But this legislation will apply to vehicles which were previously exempt due to their age - vehicles registered before the rules came into effect used to be exempt. Not any more!

Many medium-sized cars will be caught as well - examples include some Astra or Focus models.

Nope - I'd read about this a few months back and I decided to get rid of my CO2-spewing Audi TT and get a spiffy new Beemer 1-series with much less emissions. I'f I'd kept the TT, then this years tax would have been in the £300 region, and next years would have been in the £400 region (it has 226g/km CO2). Compared with the previous years £180-ish tax, it was a bit too much of an increase for me to accept. Plus, I needed a car with usable back seats :-)

I had read a piece about this last year after the 2007 budget and I'm one of those drivers that will be heavily taxed. Last year my road tax was around £210 due to the engine size and emissions but this it will be more like £300 as you have stated.

The problem is I have no choice but to pay it or get another small car but then you have the problem that everyone else is in the same situation. Thus hence forth a glut of large engined CO2 emitting cars that no-one particularly wants due to the cost of running them. So it is a case for most of just put up and shut up as there is nothing you can really do. The government get your money one way or another no matter how much you try to fight the system.

No it wont affect me but I dont approve of it, the idea of green taxes etc doesnt hold up to scrutiny and to be honest often defeats the object.
For instance, school runs are a problem, the answer can often be for people with larger cars (people carriers to take a groups of children yet these are penalised as exactly the sort of vehicles which are undesirabel.
Its at times a very backwards logic imho.

Thank goodness this doesn't affect me as my car was made well before 2001, but you had me worried until I read the report. To be honest I thought this was implemented ages ago, either that or I read about it ages ago, either way I knew it only affected cars made in 2001 or later.
