It is a piece of fecal matter - a dropping. However since your tag is Shakespeare I thought I´d leave you this link - seems the Bard wasn´t above using lavatory humour!!

Shakespeare's use of "turd" is a pun on "third", but still makes for some giggles during 8th grade English Literature. The meaning of "turd" in Shakespeare's day was the same as the modern definition, so he knew what he was doing. The Bard was not above using toilet humour to get some laughs from his audience.

In those days, it was common to use "turd" as an insult. Unlike many Victorian words ("naughty", for instance), the derogatoriness of calling someone a turd hasn't changed.

An extremely unpleasant surprise when passing gas.

To quote the greatest philosopher of the modern age, Mr. Homer J Simpson, "Sweet Merciful Crap!"

Supplement from 05/31/2008 08:45pm:

I almost forgot; when made into a sandwich, it is an exceptional metaphor for life.

"Life is like a Turd sandwich: The more bread you have, the less **** you have to eat."

Mayo or Miracle Whip- you decide.
