Do you think this site needs more moderators and what makes a good moderator?

After Vultan leaving it made me wonder what the community thinks about the amount of moderators we currently have and the amount of cover we give to the site.

Do you think we have enough moderators?
Less is not an option I have no plans on going anywhere ;o)

Have you found the amount of coverage we put into the site is acceptable? I mean is do you find there is always a mod around when you need one and we respond to things in a acceptable time frame? Remember we have lives and need to sleep too lol

What do you think makes a good moderator for a site like this?

Any thing else you want to add that I have not covered?

Oh and finally who would you like to appoint if you were asked to pick new moderators to add to the existing team and what makes them the perfect candidate?
(Feel free to pick from the current membership or anyone else from real life or fiction)

I think that the current moderators could probably hold the fort till Vultans return but i would like to see Tracieboo or Topaz become a replacement if one is needed i think either of them would make fair mods.

I would love to be one i have certainly been on the site longer than most here with the exception of mods and a few members lol but no chance i think.

I think Vultans imput will be gratly missed. Sometimes there are no mods about sometimes several.

I think a good moderator needs to be fair and honest as priorities, I also think it is very important they are respected within the community and sre approachable.

I certainly find it far easier to approach the moderators I know for help than those I dont though im sure all would try to help if they could.

I will have to come back to this in terms of who I would pick as I would need to mull that over a bit:)

The is meant in no disrespectful way but there are probably enough mods but as two mods are not prolific contributers to the site it is all to easy to forget about them. Thus leaving the feeling there are no mods about or very lacking in that department.

Maybe another two would make things run a bit more smoothly as sometimes when something is reported it can take quite a while for it to be removed. Let's face it I know it is a thankless job but we all need pulling into line once in a while, myself included so without mods beavering away behind the scenes we would all run amok.

How many of us though would be willing to put our hand up for the job though? <sits on hands>!

I'm not sure that you need any more moderators, Alfrex, inquizician and Pennyw1se are not used very often so I imagine that there are sufficient for the purpose. As for who I would suggest, the only two candidates that I feel have the necessary qualities are hdtg and rain, whether they'd want to do it is another matter.

Maybe we could try the 'poacher turned gamekeeper' approach and I would take pleasure in forwarding Candy for the role... could be interesting?

Judging by the many replies over the last couple of years, many members are against censorship in any form and feel that the presence of moderators is unnecessary. In many ways this is correct as being a member should bring a certain amount of responsibility and it should be a case of self moderation. there are obviously times when members wander across the boundaries but those occasions should be few and far between.

I didn't have the opportunity to bid farwell to vultan as he had me blacklisted but would have said that I'd miss him.

I think that the moderators do a reasnable job here : I don't always agree with them but I understand the need for moderation.

I think that moderators need to be Fair, Firm and especially important Consistent. It's a job that I could do but I doubt that anyone would ask me to.

I must admit that, while I will definitely miss Vultan, this site seems to run pretty well and I don't see any great moderation problem. Whether that is because we all know the rules and try to stick to them or because of moderation that I don't see I don't know.
The other half of the story is the workload it puts on the moderators themselves. If that gets too much then additional mods are probably needed.

As for qualities for a new moderator - Above all, the time to do it and, secondly, the ability to put their personal feelings behind them when they put their moderator hat on.

I think that Beeper has it about right (now) whilst acknowledging the sturdy work of the others.

I've set out my criteria above - as an opinion to Her Next Door's response.

I've had an idea - why not have a "Moderator of the week" witht he zapping wand passed to a different person each week so we can all have a go?! Or are you worried that we might make a mess of the moderators' lounge at Lycos Towers?

I would be more worried what kind of zapping a "Moderator of the week" might do, what if they deleted all the mods other mods profiles and would not give back the wand? Mind you maybe it is only me that has such wicked thoughts hehe
