How efficient are the new motorway crash barriers? I've noticed that crash barriers now have a box at the beginning rather that the old slope. Would they bring you to halt quicker?

I can't find a picture for UK motorways but it is something like this, but on the opposite side of the road obviously!

Th idea is that a car hitting them is not running up a small ramp and, therefore, less likely to flip.

On the other hand, motorcyclists hate these new barriers. Clipping one of the old style barriers would make your bike slide-out from under you. This will stop your bike dead, and you'll go right over the top.

The one in the picture also has exposed legs under the barrier, these have been known to rip the limbs off of motorcyclists. A few years ago, a biker hit one of this type near Portsmouth. It ripped one of his arms off and he bled-out before an ambulance could get to him, even though the hospital was only 2 miles away and they were called immediately after the accident. That section of barrier now has metal sheet covering the posts to ground level.

An impact attenuator,
also known as a crash cushion or crash attenuator, is a device intended to reduce the damage done to structures, vehicles, and motorists resulting from a motor vehicle collision. Impact attenuators are designed to absorb the errant vehicle's kinetic energy and/or redirect the vehicle away from the hazard.[1]

A number of European countries, notably France, Germany and the UK are leading the way in installing under rails on barriers to prevent riders coming into direct contact with posts.
Given that motorcyclists and vehicles require two completely different approaches to design a crash barrier, a choice was made to favour the vehicles for obvious statistical and safety reasons. There are clearly contradictions to besolved here and that is well known territory to a TRIZ enthousiast.
