Experian says you can only search on yourself unless you have the permission of the person you wish to search for:

http://experian.metafaq.com/templates/experian/main/answerPage?_mftvst:answerRef... copy

They also keep a record of any searches made, so the person will be able to find out that you have searched (and I guess any subsequent search results on that person would show that too)

Supplement from 07/02/2008 12:06pm:

You can see if they were recently (last 3 months) made bankrupt here:
http://www.insolvency.gov.uk/bankruptcy/bankruptcysearch.htm copy
Other links on that site take you to where to find out if they are a disqualified director.

I also see on the Google results that there are places that will give you bankruptcy search results for the last 5 years.

If the person is purporting to be financially stable, then a request for financial records to demonstrate that is probably in order. If they're not willing, then don't let them in to the partnership. You may also wish to provide equivalent documentation as part of your application to join the partnership if that is appropriate

To search other people's credit histories (other than your own) requires you to be licensed by the Data protection act 1984. Licensed credit brokers have this as they are in the business of issuing credit and evaluating risk.

You could however agree mutually to do your own searches and share the findings.
