You might like to supplement the question telling us about her ;) that way we could come up with something she might like.

My suggestion would be maybe a dvd or cd of some music or programme she used to listen to when she was a kid or maybe one of those cd's/dvd's of the year she was born.

My Nan is a keen gardener and so I bought her a pair of anti bramble gardening gauntlets.

She loved them, the site I used was http://www.handpickedcollection .com copy

Its a really cool site where all the products have been handpicked by a panel of style guru's

Below is the link for the gauntlets if your interested?

If she doesn't really need anything maybe you could take her to a nice restaurant or to the theatre?
Or you could actually take her shopping and let her choose something, that way, she gets what she wants and also gets to spend some quality time with her grandchild.

Supplement from 07/11/2008 04:08pm:

Just had a another thought, you don'tsay how old you are or how old your nan is, but how about some IOU's? make a little book and write things like...i promise to weed your garden for an hour, i promise to hoover once a week for a month, i promise to get your shopping, i promise to wash your windows. that sort of thing, i did that for my nan many years ago, she loved it, as it also meant she saw me more often and she got all those little jobs done that always get put off

How about making up an album of photos for her - special occasions, children and grandchildren, treasured places, that sort of thing. Then sit down and go through it with her and give her the opportunity to share some lovely family stories with you.

I'm pretty sure she'd love that - something personal to treasure and a whole chunk of time with you.

a falconry day. it's relaxing and not physicaly draining. it's wonderful getting close to there beautiful birds. a real experience for any age. the birds weigh less than a bag of sugar so you don't need strength to hold one. i went last year, and ok i'm 19. but there were people of all ages there. she'll never forget it. infact she might want to keep going back just to get close to birds you only see on tv or catch a glimps of in the wild. i can't find my photos, but hope a painting will do. it's an eagle owl. the one used in the harry potter movies, owned by draco malfoy.

thinking about images, how about a family photo of every member of your family all together. printed onto canvas and framed. everyone she loves and who love her just as much.

Throw a party for her and invite her friends and relatives - especially the ones she likes and those she hasn't seen for a while. Make it a day to treasure.

Whether you let her know in advance or throw it as a total surprise depends on her constitution.
