Have you ever been to Amsterdam?

My wife and I are discussing taking a vacation in Europe sometime later this year. I have always longed to go to Amsterdam because my friend told me he went a few years ago and it was the best and most stress free vacation he had ever taken. Have you ever been to Amsterdam? If so, how was your experience? As an American, what are some things I need to watch out for?

Haven't been there in a few years but Amsterdam is obviously a very likeable and visitable city. It's certainly more laid back than London or Paris, but also less of a metropolis. I'd buy a travel guide such as a Rough Guide and at least pick a few spots you want to see.
As an American I'd say you need to watch out for the coffeeshops!
In any case, godspeed to you.

I went there a few years back. There is a rich vein of culture, there, a refreshing laid-back attitude and sense of mild decadence that seems to pervade the air.
There's plenty to see and do, and some sights will make your eyes pop out.

Have been there 2 times and visit Amsterdam again in September.
"Amsterdam is one of the greatest small cities in the world" is really true!
http://www.amsterdam.info/ copy
Most sights are in a walking distance...and it's so nice to walk along the canals and old houses. The museums are also a 'must see' and also the red light district..even for me as a woman it was interesting!;-) Compared to other red light districts the one in Amsterdam is full of tourists and it's also safe as long as you just want to watch andwalk on the main streets. But you have to be a bit careful because of the drug dealers but as long as you ignore them it's OK. They say pickpockets are on many places but never saw some.
Most people in Amsterdam speak English and they are very friendly and helpful so I#ll be sure that you and your wife enjoy your stay!

i am half-dutch so i have been lucky enough to go over to holland quite a few times.even tough ive never actually lives in holland, every time i go there i feel like im home.
everyone is friendly and its amazing how you can feel less stressed over there. the windmills are amazing (managed to get stuck up on top of one once-long story). if you get the chance, take a boat ride along the cannals, youll get a tour guide explaining everything to you,and theyll point out the narrowest house in holand to you, beleive me it is rather narrow!
there are coffee shops and then "coffee shops",just be aware of which ones you go in. i hope you do take the plunge and visit,im sure it will become the first visit of many.
happy trails!

I was lucky enough to go to Amsterdam a couple of times while I lived in Holland. Wonderful city !! I would say that the only thing you have to look out for, American or not, is having too much fun.

Amsterdam is one of the best places in the world to visit ... possibly because the population is so happy, laid back and non-judgemental. The architecture and art are wonderful of course, but it was the atmosphere I fell for.
One thing to beware of - better not to even think about driving there, you will never be able to park anywhereyou want to be. One day visit there was almost completely wasted trying to park - walk, it is better for you and you get to see so much more!
Enjoy and relax!
