what is a good FREE software for recording thrugh the line-in connection of a soundcard?

must be free not shareware or limited time trial. must save as mp3 or be able to convert from wav to mp3. idk if the type of card is relevent but it's a creative labs soundblaster 5.1 live.

There's a built in Sound Recorder in Windows that you can use (Usually under Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Entertainment --> Sound Recorder).

This should be capable of ripping direct to MP3 - you'll need to muck around with the options to select the input channel and the output format, but it's very straightforward.
