Thankfully no, it's not something I've ever had to do, although I've been trained to do it.

Supplement from 08/28/2008 10:41pm:

the Heimlich Manoeuvre (after Henry Heimlich, who first described the procedure in a June 1974 informal article entitled "Pop Goes the Cafe Coronary," published in the journal Emergency Medicine). Edward A. Patrick, MD, PhD, an associate of Heimlich, has claimed to be the uncredited co-developer of the procedure, and has been quoted calling it the Patrick manoeuvre. Heimlich has objected to the name "abdominal thrusts" on the grounds that the vagueness of the term "abdomen" could cause the rescuer to exert force at the wrong site.

Have had to do it on my daughter when she was about 10 months old and choked when someone decided to give her a walkers crisp when she had only had been used to skips and quavers.

The only other time is when I used to be a waitress and gave the manageress a sweet and she choked. It flew across the room and hit a customer directly on the side of the head, we laughed.

The manoeuvre is named after a man who found the technique over 30 years ago.

Heimlich Manoeuvre is no longer called that now it is more commonly known as abdominal thrusts. you should never do it on a child particularly as old as 10 months i'm shocked topaz ;o0

The correct procedure for a child that is choking is to lean them forward and give 5 back slaps and then 5 more if this does not work then give them 5 chest compressions just like you would if you was doing CPR.

Also do that for pregnant women.
For adults you do 5 back slaps and then the abdominal thrusts unless they go unconscious on you then you do the chest compressions.

I have had to treat a 2 year old little girl with the treatment above. We were booked on with Essex ambulance and the mother called 999 and we were given the call as we were just round the corner we attended and saved her life. After we got her settled we took her to the local hospital for a check up.

Yes, twice. An old guy choked on a slice of bread that a new nursing assistant gave him, despite being warned he was a "choker." I had to vacuum it out with a suction machine.

The second time,I was in holiday with 8 residents in Oban. This time a man choked, trying to swallow half a cow. I struck gold in one go. I didn't even crack a rib. A steak that had been moulded into the size and shape of a banana landed back on the plate.

He was ok, but half an hour later he threw up the little dinner he had managed to get down in the lobby. It's a good job I was very fond of him.
