Killing slugs with oats.

I have been told that if you put down oats and slugs eat them, the oats will swell up by absorbing water and thus kill the slug. Has anyone tried this and if so did it work?

It's a new one on me and on my brother, who is a keen gardener. He says try it out and see.

There doesn't seem to be any sure way of dealing with slugs and this sort of solution seems to come up now and then as an alternative to slug pellets.

Others I have heard of are eggshells, pine needles and holly leaves which seem to discourage but not stop the slugs.

A beer trap - a partly filled glass of beer half buried in the ground which the slugs fall into - kills them but kills anything harmless that falls into it too. It is also a waste of good beer says my brother.

The latest is nematodes which are micro-organisms that eat the slugs. I don't know if they are effective but they are certainly becoming popular as an alternative to chemicals.

ive heard that sawdust scatterd around the soil stops them because they dont like the feel so they avoid it or u could always put salt down lol but i know the beer trap works really well.

Possibly, but what's wrong with salt? Cheaper and certainly has superior water-absorbing properties.

PS: I put this in comments as I don't consider this a credit-worthy answer. If you want to answer back just write another comment, e. g. "@cairina: Och aye."
